Becoming an Outstanding Student didn't come by accident for Kristian Marius Maturbongs, a sixth-semester student at the Faculty of Law at Universitas Pattimura (Unpatti). Through persistence, creative ideas, and a passion for continuous learning, the student, known as Kia, won first place as the Outstanding Student at the Unpatti Faculty of Law and sixth place as the Outstanding Student at the Unpatti level.

Kia's story began with an unexpected announcement she received from the Faculty of Law's student affairs office. She was contacted to participate in the faculty-level Outstanding Student selection. This event was no stranger to her, as Kia had previously been quite active in various student activities, both at the faculty and university level.

"Actually, I didn't register myself at first; I was contacted by the faculty's student affairs department. This was probably because I had previously participated in several activities and competitions, winning on behalf of both the faculty and the university," Kia told Hukumonline on Tuesday (April 8).

The Outstanding Student selection process began at the faculty level. Kia wasn't the only candidate; she competed with several other students. However, as time went on, many participants withdrew. Ultimately, Kia persevered and diligently participated in the entire selection process. She emerged as the first place winner at the faculty level and earned the honor of representing the Faculty of Law at a higher level.

The proposal is a key aspect of this selection process. Participants are asked to develop ideas in the form of an innovative proposal that represents their respective fields of expertise. Kia, who is from the legal sciences field, chose to create a proposal entitled Cyberpolis, namely the idea of establishing a law enforcement system in the digital world through the role of "cyber police".

"My proposal is about Cyberpolis, like an online police force. Broadly speaking, it's aimed at curbing legal violations in cyberspace. Because nowadays, legal violations occur not only in the physical world but also in the digital space," he said.

After winning the faculty-level competition, Kia advanced to the university level with the same proposal, but with improvements and revisions based on feedback from the previous selection. At the university level, she competed against nine other finalists and placed sixth. For Kia, this achievement wasn't just about the title, but about the invaluable learning experience.

"I learned a lot, from writing a good and correct proposal to discussions and receiving guidance from my lecturers. This will also prepare me for my final assignment," he said.

Interestingly, in addition to competing, Kia is also active in campus organizations. She is a member of the Faculty of Law's Debate Activity Unit, which indirectly hones her ability to formulate and present legal arguments, a crucial skill in the legal world. She won first place in the Maluku Regional Police Legal Debate Competition (2024) and was a finalist in the East Region Legal Debate Competition in Makassar (2024).

Not stopping there, in 2023, this man from Kei Kecil Island, Southeast Maluku Regency was also active as an administrator of the Catholic Student Activity Unit of Universitas Pattimura and until now regularly serves as a psalmist in Eucharistic celebrations in the Diocese of Amboina.

"I prioritize. Lectures are definitely my number one priority. If there's a conflict with other activities, I assess the impact. But I still try to attend, even if it's just for a minute. Because I believe that if we take responsibility, we must be prepared to be tired and make sacrifices," he said.

Speaking about her future, Kia firmly stated that she aspires to become a lawyer. Her love of debate and legal argumentation has prepared her for a career in advocacy. However, she remains open to other career possibilities in the legal field.

"The legal profession is what's most on my mind right now. But I believe if God has other plans, I'm ready," he said.

"Dare to take risks. Don't be afraid of failure. Because everything I've experienced hasn't been comfortable. But because I was willing to take chances, I ended up having an extraordinary experience. There are many smart people out there, but not everyone can see opportunities. So being smart isn't enough; we also need to be observant," he advised.
